Taiwan | December 29, 2015 Compiled by James Smyth, Ben Goren, Michal Thim and Jonathan Sullivan. When I first started researching Taiwanese elections, writing my Masters thesis in 2004, I spent many long hours photocopying party ads at the National Central Library archive in Taipei. In the first year of my PhD, I spent an entire day with Dafydd Fell at SOAS watching his prized, and well worn, collection of party ad videos. Data was hard to come by; Taiwanese sources were rudimentary, websites were user unfriendly and even simple things like getting survey datasets was a trial. But that is no longer the case. As I wrote in a China Quarterly paper in 2013, several things have changed in Taiwan which have made life a lot easier and richer for political analysts and election watchers. Taiwan’s e-government infrastructure has improved to a world leading level; political actors of all kinds have embraced the affordances of multi- and social media; Taiwanese political science has professionalized, creating and making available all kinds of data; and the level of external interest in Taiwan has increased dramatically. In sum these developments make studying Taiwanese elections “easy” and fun (certainly compared to doing research on Chinese politics). In fact the issue nowadays is not insufficient information about Taiwanese elections, but the overwhelming abundance. In order to help fellow Taiwan watchers navigate this abundance, we have compiled this list of electronic resources; we hope you will find it useful. Great list. However, the links take me to a University of Nottingham page which asks for a login rather than the actual website. Reply
